CollegeBoard Advanced Placement
Produced virtual instructor-led training courses to supplement live classroom instruction for Advanced Placement students
Results: Ensured customer retention & increased efficiency of instructor-led learning.
AP Classroom
This sample from an AP Biology module covers the subject of keystone species and the skill of argumentation in essay writing.
Problem: In the last decade, the Advanced Placement curriculum was rewritten to focus on critical thinking and problem-solving skills rather than memorization and recall. AP teachers struggled to understand the new concepts, and students’ exam scores were negatively affected.
Solution: My in-house team partnered with top AP teachers to produce in-depth video modules covering complex skills in the most popular AP courses.
Results: We tested our video modules with students, and they were found to be effective at increasing students’ scores on complex assessment items. With a definitive resource, AP teachers were better prepared to teach these topics. The video modules were shared in advance of in-person classes using a “flipped class” model, which created efficiency for teachers by reducing live in-person instruction time.
Additional work samples:
For our US History lessons, we sourced historical images and worked with our in-house legal team to clear copyrights.
I designed a multimedia experience that included interactive lessons where students could practice critical thinking skills.
Knowing that AP would need to create video at scale for 38 courses, we experimented with different modes of production for our AP prototypes. These final two examples were recorded at home—a more cost-effective method than recording in a studio.
AP Daily
In this sample Human Geography lesson, my team worked with the instructor to create visual representations of city structures
Problem: In the 2010s, independent creators like Sal Khan of Khan Academy began publishing free and accessible exam preparation videos on YouTube, and students and teachers began integrating these resources into their studies. In 2020 College Board responded by hiring an in-house media team that would publish authoritative and equitable study videos. The need for asynchronous educational video sharply increased when COVID-19 disrupted in-person learning in 2020 and forced schools to adopt a blended virtual and in-person learning experience.
Solution: Quickly meeting the needs of an audience of 2.5+ million students, our team quickly produced AP Daily, a series of weekly virtual instructor-led videos to ensure students would stay on track with their curriculum throughout the school year. Our content creation team included 23 remote full-time video producers, 8 freelance production assistants, and 200 high school teachers. I contracted software vendor EditShare to design a cloud server solution for video production and distribution with custom automations. Over the course of 8 months, our team produced over 5000 live videos with an average length of 10–15 minutes.
Results: Within 7 months, our audience of AP students collectively viewed 19 million videos with at least 95% completion. This program ensured high-quality instruction was available to all AP students in 2020, helped students complete exams in exchange for cost-saving college credits, and retained nine-figure exam administration revenue.
EditShare submitted our project's case study and won a 2021 Emmy Award for Technology and Engineering from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
